Fine books, fine art, and a cat.

/ˈbo͝okˌplāt/ : noun : a decorative label bearing the name of A book's owner.

We’re a small, independent bookstore nestled in the heart of downtown Chestertown. Since opening our doors in the fall of 2004, we’ve received accolades from What’s Up? Media and ranked #24 on’s Favorite Shopping Spots list. We’re also proud co-founders of the annual Kent County Poetry Festival - now twelve years strong - and host various authors for annual events like Downrigging Weekend, National Music Festival, A Dickens of a Christmas, and Harry Potter Festival.

In fact, we owe the growth of our store to Harry Potter in particular. Like Mr. Potter, we began our journey in what was little more than a closet under the stairs; it was the sale of one rare copy which enabled us to expand outwards, and the outpouring of support from our friends and patrons which have nurtured our continued growth into the present-day, labyrinthine Bookplate that you know.

What’s in store is now online.

As our specialty lies primarily in politics, local and world history, art, social issues, and other nonfiction genres, our related subsections are extensive. Not all of our inventory has made its way online yet, but what has can be found exclusively on our AbeBooks page.

Local Art

We love to support local artists through commission and consignment alike! Although our online shop carries only the commissioned work, you can buy original pieces or commission featured artists directly through their personal websites.

Imported Pottery

If you’re looking for function and form, look no further than our custom pottery. Each piece is imported from Spain and Portugal and is hand-painted and inscribed with our name, making it the perfect gift or keepsake. See more at our Etsy page.

We have a wide assortment of curiosities and rarities. These pieces can be purchased in-store, or, if you see something of interest but can’t make it to the brick-and-mortar Bookplate, can be inquired after at the email address below.

We’ve dipped our toes in shop-specific merchandise in the past, but beginning in 2019, we’re diving in headfirst. Totes, messenger bags, Keke bookplates, bookmarks, and more to come - all available to you in-store and online. No external links needed - it’s all right here.

In a good bookroom you feel in some mysterious way that you are absorbing the wisdom contained in all the books through your skin, without even opening them.
